Join ESA & Cellar as we host the co-founders of SpikedSeltzer, Nick Shields and Dave Holmes to learn more about how they launched and successfully grew their business. In case you're not familiar with the product, SpikedSeltzer is the original brand of hard seltzer. It was created in 2012 by fifth-generation brewer Nick Shields, who began formulating five-gallon batches out of his garage in Westport, CT. The unique beverage, which he made by combining disciplines of brewing and winemaking, focuses on simple ingredients. Nick and his longtime friend and business partner, Dave Holmes, founded start-up Boathouse Beverage, LLC, in Norwalk, CT, and brought SpikedSeltzer to market in 2013. Four years later, after partnering with Anheuser-Busch, SpikedSeltzer became a national brand with distribution in all 50 states.

Nick Shields is an entrepreneur with an MS in Food Science from Cornell and a resume that includes experience at Pepsi, Cadbury Schweppes, Ocean Spray, Nantucket Nectars, and W├Âlffer Estate. The fifth-generation brewer is the great-great grandson of Rudolph Haffenreffer who brought German-style lagers to Boston in 1869. He lives in Westport, CT with his wife and three children.

Dave Holmes is an entrepreneur with an MBA in Finance from Columbia. Before co-founding SpikedSeltzer he worked in the financial industry in New York, and also as a timber frame builder in rural Maine. Holmes believed in his friendÔÇÖs creation since tasting the very first batches in NickÔÇÖs garage in 2012. He lives in Rowayton, CT with his wife and three children.
