What is the Stern Luxury & Retail Club?

The demand for MBAs in the luxury and retail industries is growing rapidly. As a top-tier business school, the New York University Stern School of Business is a premier source for top talent. Companies looking to recruit outstanding new employees routinely work with Stern and the Luxury & Retail Club to identify and hire MBAs. As such, the mission of the Stern Luxury & Retail Club is to promote NYU Stern as a premier source of talent and academic leadership in the luxury, retail, hospitality, and spirits industries. We achieve this through the ongoing education of our members and through direct engagement with executives, alumni, professors and students connected to and interested in the luxury and retail communities. The Luxury & Retail Club serves as a continual source of information and guidance, across all functions, for those students seeking careers in related industries.

How did the club begin?

The NYU Stern community founded the Luxury & Retail Club in 2004 driven by MBA candidates’ strong interest in careers in the luxury and retail industries and in response to companies’ increasing drive to recruit MBA students into management ranks. Since then, membership has grown to more than 600 first-year, second-year, part-time, and alumni members.

How do I join the club?

NYU Stern students are extended the invitation to join the club at the beginning of their first semester.  Students are given a lifetime membership: which gives them access to club’s resources for years to come

What are common club member backgrounds?

There is a great deal of variety of experience and interest within our club membership.  Some members have previous professional experiences within the industry while others are career switchers.

What do the club activities consist of?

The Luxury & Retail Club promotes industry knowledge by hosting collaborative events, including corporate presentations, executive speaker series, lunch and learns, Day-in-the-Life company visits, and knowledge management sessions.

Every Fall, we host our annual Luxury & Retail Conference.  In the past the programming has included keynotes, panels, consulting workshops and roundtables with industry insiders.  Our keynote speakers have ranged from Bruno Vinciguerra, the COO of Sothebys, to Karen Katz, CEO of the Neiman Marcus Group, to Glen Senk the CEO of Urban Outfitters.

Throughout the year we have an Executive Speaker Series and hear perspectives from different companies throughout the industry. These executives have included the entire executive team at the GAP, Mickey Drexler, the CEO of J.Crew, as well as representatives from Mandarin Oriental, LVMH, Silver Jet, and DKNY.

The club also hosts shopping nights, store walk-throughs, Day-in-the-Life on-site company visits, and an annual eco-friendly, charity fashion show called “Think Social, Drink Local."

What opportunities are there for networking with NYU Stern alumni and others within the industry?

The club involves Stern alumni as much as possible.  Each semester, there is an Alumni Event which is hosted specifically for Stern graduates in an effort to foster relationships between Stern alumni and current students. All Stern students have access to the alumni database and most alumni are very friendly and accessible to students.

Is there a Luxury or Retail specialization?

NYU Stern School of Business is the first Top-Tier business school offering a Luxury Marketing specialization in the MBA program. You can read more about the course options on our Curriculum tab or on the main NYU Stern website.

What are some careers of club members?
